Confusion about New Zealand roads resulted in a crash near Queenstown yesterday.

Emergency services were called to State Highway 6 in the Gibbston valley following reports of a two vehicle crash near the Kawarau Bungy Centre about 5pm.

Moments before the crash, the Thai driver of a white Toyota Highlander 4WD travelling towards Queenstown decided to turn into the bungy centre.

''He got it a bit wrong,'' the Southern District Command Centre deployment co-ordinator, Senior Sergeant Dave Scott, of Dunedin, said.

The driver turned directly into the path of a contractor's Ford Courier ute, which was towing a trailer carrying a small digger.

One of the five Thai male occupants of the rental vehicle, who was not wearing a seat belt, received a black eye, whiplash and some minor bruising and grazing.

''Other than that, everyone is shaken and unhurt.

"Both vehicles were extensively damaged in the crash.

"The incident illustrated ''foreign tourists not being used to New Zealand roads'', he said.

''[The driver] has wanted to turn into the car park, but has become confused and looks like he has caused the accident through that confusion.''
