Councillor seeks QAC assurance

A call for a no-surprises relationship with the Queenstown Airport Corporation was made at last week's full Queenstown Lakes District Council meeting.

Cr Cath Gilmour sought the addition of such a clause to the corporation's statement of intent, which was considered at the meeting.

The "no-surprises" model, which proposed a collaborative relationship with the council as a shareholder, was included in statements of intent for two other council-controlled organisations, Lakes Environmental and Lakes Leisure.

"Considering all that has happened over the last year [including the board's creation and sale of $27.7 million worth of shares to Auckland International Airport], and the negative impact it has had on our community, I would be very disappointed and surprised if the QAC board did not take this opportunity to step up to the mark on their communication policy with their majority shareholder," Cr Gilmour told the Otago Daily Times this week.

The change could not be made last week because it had not been raised by the council's finance and accountability committee, which had previously considered the draft statement of intent. The council would have to consult the QAC board about the change before it could insist on it.
