The driver of a van which crashed at Queensberry on Good Friday, killing an Indian woman, has been charged in connection with the crash.

Sergeant Matthew Alley, of Alexandra, said the driver, a 46-year-old Indian man, would appear in the Alexandra District Court on April 28 to face a charge of aggravated careless driving causing death.

Kusum Rohit Kenia (62), of Mumbai, died when a Hertz rental van left State Highway 6 and crashed into a 2m-deep ditch at Queensberry, between Wanaka and Cromwell, on March 25.

The van contained seven tourists and was one of two in a convoy carrying a Mumbai tour party of 14 from Queenstown Airport to Wanaka, the Otago Daily Times reported after the crash.

The road, busy with traffic travelling to and from the Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow, was closed for almost two hours.

The surviving six occupants of the van, four men, aged 46, 23, 62 and 57 and two women, aged 23 and 55, were transported to hospital by helicopter and ambulance.

All had been discharged following treatment at Dunedin and Dunstan Hospitals, Sgt Alley said yesterday.

Asked the nationality of the occupants, he said that was personal information and would not be released.
