Organisers of the Winter Games festival programme are taking ski couture back to its roots at August's adventure expo with a "Retro Ski Fashion Contest".

The August 13 expo at the Queenstown Memorial Hall will showcase the region's adventure offerings with exhibitors specialising in adventure experiences and products, with competitions, giveaways and entertainment on offer.

Also available will be an essential winter staple for many - mulled wine.

"Locals, tourists and front-line staff will be able to come in and find out what there is to offer in terms of new gear, be able to book adventure activities ... and from 6pm, that's when it kicks into a party with the fashion show and entertainment," festival manager Malcolm Blakey said.

The AJ Hackett-sponsored expo is an addition to the Winter Games, which this year will feature a full festival line-up. In Queenstown this will include music events, a "Wine Down" tasting event, a comedy roadshow, beer festival and adventure film festival.

Mr Blakey said the fashion contest would be only one of many activities scheduled for the party stage of the evening, with more to be announced in the next few weeks.

While he expects to see plenty of frosty fashion from the '70s and '80s for the contest - which will be set to a backdrop of '80s ski movies - retro ski gear of a slighter newer vintage would not be turned away.

"People can come register, then we will get them up on the stage and down the catwalk ... It's all about strutting your stuff on the catwalk, and getting into the retro character," Mr Blakey said.

Sponsored by ski brand Volkl, the winner of the competition will receive a new pair of skis worth $1800.

Hosted by local Volkl representatives, the contest winner will be determined by "clap-o-meter" audience response.

The Memorial Hall will open at 10am, with festivities finishing at 8pm. Entry to the expo will be free.

Mr Blakey said the inaugural adventure expo was only the start of what they had planned, with hopes of expanding it during the next games by moving it to the Queenstown Events Centre with separate sections for different adventure avenues.

While the majority of stalls for the expo had been filled, Mr Blakey said there were still "a few" available, and interested parties could contact him at malcolm@wintergamesnz.com.
