Freeriders versus untamed Mother Nature and the world's snowboarding stars are the subjects of the first two movies to be screened in Queenstown and Wanaka as part of Winter Games NZ 2013.

If the Banff Mountain Film Festival highlights compilation earlier this month whetted Wakatipu appetites for outdoors action and adventure captured by movie camera, the Adventure Film Festival, part of the Winter Games from August 15 to 20, will be a feast for adrenaline junkies.

Where the Trail Ends (2012) follows the world's top freeride mountain bikers as they search for unridden terrain throughout the world, ultimately shaping the future of big mountain freeriding.

The film documents a cast of colourful characters and is billed as the most progressive and ambitious mountain biking ever attempted.

Pretty Wise (2012) is described as an uplifting and whimsical snowboarding film showcasing the talents of 11 rising stars, including New Zealander Jake Koia, and three veterans who will leave their indelible impression on the world of snowboarding.

Organisers say a new partnership with Auckland airport as naming sponsor has opened promotional opportunities for the Adventure Film Festival at the gateway airport, increasing the exposure of both the Winter Games NZ and the movie showcase.

''Auckland Airport's involvement with the Adventure Film Festival is a great boost for the event and will help the event continue to grow as it enters its third year,'' Winter Games NZ festivals manager Malcolm Blakey, of Arrowtown, said.

''We're also delighted to be working with Red Bull, bringing some of the most exhilarating films featuring the world's most daring athletes to Winter Games NZ.''

Following the sell-out competition sessions last year, the Adventure Film Festival has announced the 2013 competitions are

open for entries.

The Over The Top Helicopters Feature Film Competition and Skyline Short Film Competition are open to film-makers from throughout the world who have an adventure film to share.

• Films will be screened in three venues this year - the Queenstown Memorial Centre, Reading Cinemas Queenstown and Cinema Paradiso, Wanaka.
