Foodbank drive next week

Emergency service sirens in Frankton and Kelvin Heights will signal festive cheer, not cause for fear on Wednesday as the Wakatipu Lions holds its annual foodbank drive.

The Wakatipu Lions service group will be hitting the streets from 6pm along with St John Wakatipu and Frankton Fire Brigade members to collect non-perishable Christmas food.

Fire engines and ambulances will be sounding their sirens and playing Christmas music as they move from street to street in search of food donations.

Now in its third year, the drive collects for the Salvation Army foodbank.

Salvation Army community worker Blair McKenzie said he was "absolutely blown away" by last year's response.

"Last year we had a full econovan - quite a big one - with boxes and boxes of food ... and some people came out with cash, so we bought even more food, which was wonderful."

He said the drive was particularly important considering the demand placed on the foodbank by the Christchurch earthquake, hungry out-of-work Queenstowners in June and "all-round challenging times".

"At this time we are a little better off as the Readings Cans Festival [exchanging tinned food for movie tickets] gave us a wee boost, but it's always an issue," Mr McKenzie said.

"It's very exciting and we are looking forward to get some food back in."

Organiser and Wakatipu Lions member Pauline Ponton said the Kelvin Heights collection party would start at Jardine Park at 6pm, making its way towards the Frankton Fire Station.

Meanwhile, two parties would cover Frankton; one covering off the lakeside streets and the other visiting the suburbs surrounding Remarkables Park and the airport.

Mrs Ponton called for people to help "spread Christmas cheer and support those less fortunate" by donating to the drive.
