About $1000 was raised at the second annual Gear Sale on Saturday towards furniture for the new $1.4 million teaching and learning block at Queenstown Primary School.

More than 40 bargain hunters waited outside the school hall for the sale to begin.

Sports equipment, clothes, camping gear, wetsuits, preschool stock, prams, toys, skates, cycle helmets, surfboards and a dinghy were for sale on stalls manned by 30 parent and Parent Teachers Association (PTA) volunteers.

The more than 40 bicycles were the most sought-after goods.

Many items were priced about the $5 to $10 mark and offered good choices for parents before Christmas, PTA committee member and co-organiser Tracey Pedersen said.

New rugby jerseys and shorts were on sale from Canterbury of New Zealand, while new cups, torches and bags were offered by Image Solutions.

New outdoor clothing was on offer by Frontrunner and Mitre 10 donated three new tents.

Principal John Western said it was the Gear Sale's second year, but the first year retailers had contributed.

It raised about double that gathered last year.

The public can have its first look inside the Queenstown Primary School's teaching and learning block at a parent information evening on Wednesday at 7.30pm.

It is open to all, but aimed at year 6 families with year 7 children next year.

"We're going to be discussing our plans and asking for their input on how we'll be developing the year 7 and 8 programme," Mr Western said.

The unnamed block was 95% finished and ahead of schedule.

A dress-to-impress social evening for parents and the adult community will be held in the Queenstown Primary School hall on Saturday from 7.30pm.

A Night Full Of Stars will feature food and wine tasting, canapes and a cash bar.

The Echo, featuring music teacher and professional musician Mark Hamilton, will provide the entertainment.

Tickets cost $20 or $35 per couple and are available from the school office and on the door.

The night was to host a community get-together, but proceeds would go towards the planned school amphitheatre, Mr Western said.
