The 2012 Highlanders squad is about to dabble in a new code, "backyard cricket", against two of the resort's teams.

Highlanders general manager Roger Clark said the team would assemble at the Queenstown Recreation Ground tomorrow, which would double as a chance to meet some local people.

"We have decided to have a bit of fun on Thursday afternoon before the team heads into [a pre-season] camp in Glenorchy.

"We have a number of new faces in the team this year and we'd like to introduce these players to the Highlanders fans in Central Otago, so it would be great to see a few fans at the cricket on Thursday."

Locations Legends captain Stacy Coburn said his team awaited the cricket match with great anticipation.

"We've put together a pretty good cricket team to match the Highlanders, and we're really looking forward to seeing the team in Queenstown."

The Locations team includes several familiar faces with former Highlander Kelvin Middleton, former Wallaby Michael Brial and prominent Queenstown businessman Mike Davies rolling the arm over in the 10-over game format.

The first game starts at 4pm at the Recreation Ground with the Locations Legends playing the Highlanders Heroes before the Highlanders Big Hitters take on the Speight's Gold Medal Lads, with the final to be between the winners of both games.
