Holiday park concerns prompt call for change

The manager of the Queenstown Lakes District Council's holiday parks is calling for change at its two recently obtained Wanaka camp grounds, which have posted poor figures this year.

Appearing at yesterday's finance and corporate committee meeting, parks manager Greg Hartshorne submitted his end-of-year report, expressing concern over the performance of the Wanaka and Glendhu Bay parks, which council acquired last year.

Staff had already "toiled hard" to improve the standard of facilities at both parks and performance had improved since they were bought, Mr Hartshorne said.

However, the Wanaka Lakeview Park needed to become profitable, he said, suggesting that some cabins from the Queenstown Lakeview Holiday Park be relocated to Wanaka.

"We need to do something to get people back into the park. Staff have done an absolutely wonderful job ... but we need something to make it profitable."

He proposed three Queenstown cabins be moved there, "at no cost" to council, providing six accommodation units for the park, with potential for another three to go to the Glendhu Bay Lakeside Holiday Park "to pick up the winter market" there.

Overall, he said the four parks, which also includes the Arrowtown Born of Gold Holiday Park had managed to "hold their own" in difficult times, but he did not predict any improvement in trading over the next 12 months.
