Investigation into assault going 'well'

Queenstown police say investigations into last Saturday morning's alleged assault and kidnapping of a 28-year-old Cromwell man are proceeding "very very well".

Detective Sergeant Brian Cameron, the officer in charge of the investigation, yesterday said police had received more information of "useful assistance" from the public.

No further arrests had been made.

Forensic examinations of a white Mitsubishi Lancer saloon, which was sought in relation to the attack and located on Wednesday, were set to be completed yesterday.

While Det Sgt Cameron said it had turned up some "positive" leads, the examination had not yet identified any people in relation to the crime.

Rachel Maree Faul (20), the only person charged so far in connection with the attack, on Thursday reappeared in the Queenstown District Court.

Judge Raoul Neave rejected her application for bail and remanded her to Christchurch Women's Prison before reappearing on February 28.

She is charged with intending to commit a crime, namely assault by violent means, rendering Jason Wynyard incapable of resistance; unlawfully carrying off Mr Wynyard without his consent with intent to cause him to be confined, both charges laid indictably; and driving a motor vehicle on State Highway 6 at a speed which having regard to the circumstances might have been dangerous to the public, all on November 26.

The charges came following an early morning incident near the Crown Range Rd intersection with State Highway 6, where Mr Wynyard and his girlfriend (23) were encouraged to meet someone he knew.

He was subsequently attacked by a group of men, most of whom were wearing balaclavas and two of whom were thought to have been carrying a machete and meat cleaver.

Mr Wynyard, who had been bundled into a vehicle, was thrown from the vehicle in Arrowtown and left on the road.

Police were notified by one of the victims just after 2am and Mr Wynyard was taken to the Lakes District Hospital suffering a suspected concussion, multiple cuts and severe bruising to his head and body.

The man's girlfriend was also assaulted, receiving a blow to her jaw, which did not require hospital treatment.
