Minister of Education Anne Tolley officially opened Queenstown Primary School's new classroom block yesterday.

The 537sq m block of five "open learning studios", two "withdrawal" teaching spaces, teacher resource rooms and bathroom facilities was completed in December.

Ms Tolley said the block marked a new era for the school.

It would house year 7 pupils which stayed on at the school for the first time this year following changes to schooling in the Wakatipu area.

She said the "magnificent" new block was a modern learning environment using technology to make learning fun.

Principal John Western said the new block was a joy to work in and was the only one of its kind in New Zealand.

The sliding doors used to open up or separate spaces made it unique, he said.

The block was designed by Arrow International.

Queenstown Primary School Board chairman Noel Saxon said it was the first permanent building constructed at the school in 10 years.

"It's been a long time coming and some times a frustrating bit of work but it's a real success story," he said.

Year 7 pupil Anna Moore (10) said she was lucky to have moved into the "cool" new classrooms this term.
