A routine traffic stop by police in Wanaka at the weekend has led to the arrest of two local men on drugs charges.
The arrests came after police stopped a 31-year-old Hawea Flat man in Ardmore St about midday on Saturday for a warrant of fitness check, Sergeant Paul Crosswell said.
The man was subsequently charged with possession of cannabis for supply, and possession of utensils for smoking methamphetamine.
Further charges were likely, Sgt Crosswell said.
The man will appear in the Invercargill District Court today.
As a result of his arrest, two search warrants were executed at properties in Wanaka and Hawea Flat on Saturday night and a 26-year-old Wanaka man was arrested and charged with possession of cannabis, LSD and magic mushrooms.
He will appear in the Queenstown District Court today before a registrar.
Sgt Crosswell would not reveal the quantity of drugs allegedly involved but said it was "enough to raise our eyebrows".
The arrests were not connected with recent major drug busts in the Southern police district, which had involved Queenstown people, he said.
