Public responds over Queenstown kidnapping

A police spokesman says "positive feedback" has been received about an alleged kidnapping and assault near Queenstown early on Saturday.

Detective Sergeant Brian Cameron yesterday said the information had come from members of the public in relation to sightings of the vehicle and the offenders.

Police have so far spoken to two people believed to have been present at the violent attack on a 28-year-old Cromwell man and his girlfriend near the Crown Range Rd intersection with State Highway 6.

The man was attacked by masked assailants, two of whom were believed to have been carrying a machete and a meat cleaver, before he was bundled into a car and driven to Arrowtown where he was dumped on the side of the road.

In relation to the incident, Rachel Maree Faul (20), receptionist, of Speargrass Flat, appeared yesterday in the Queenstown District Court charged with kidnapping. Faul did not enter a plea and will reappear tomorrow.

• An Australian man prompted a search and rescue callout after he was seen falling off the Thompson St track in Queenstown early yesterday. Police said the man climbed back up to the path and the search and rescue mission was abandoned.
