The spill on State Highway 6, between Morris and Riverbank Rds, had several residents concerned about possible water supply contamination. Work carried out on Thursday to replace an air valve in the pipeline had released "unforeseen pressure", resulting in a significantly larger spill than expected, which required containment within a large temporary reservoir in a paddock about 50m east of the Cardrona River.
The pipeline repair job was now "totally finished" and there had been no seepage into the river, Mr Essenberg said. Routine checks would be carried out on water supplies in the area, which was standard practice.
Only one person had contacted the council with concerns about the spill and they had been "totally satisfied" with the information provided, Mr Essenberg said.
Otago Regional Council environmental services manager Martin King said he understood the spill had been well contained.
"I'm still awaiting reports from staff members who have been out there [at the spill site], then we'll sit down and have a look at those and see where we go from there," Mr King said.
The regional council looked at the situation purely from an "environmental effects point of view" and would not carry out any of its own tests at the site, Mr King said.
