Showbiz to perform 'Superstar'

Talented people keen to help bring Jesus Christ Superstar back to life have until Friday to express their interest, Showbiz Queenstown says.

The musical theatre company announced at its annual meeting last week it was searching for a music director, choreographer and technical director; production, stage, props and floor managers, wardrobe, hair and makeup managers and catering, front of house and bar managers.

Hopefuls should email showbizqt@gmail.com by November 29.

Successful candidates will be announced one week later.

A call for volunteers to crew the departments will be made later.

Marty Newell will direct Jesus Christ Superstar and so become the first Wakatipu director of a major Showbiz musical production since 1986.

Mr Newell will be assisted by Bryan Aitken, Christchurch-based director of Chicago, The Sound of Music and All Shook Up.

A pre-audition workshop for aspiring cast members will be held in February, before auditions from

February 14-16. The show runs in the Queenstown Memorial Centre from May 15-24.

With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, the 1971 rock opera version of the last seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth through the eyes of Judas Iscariot was first produced by Showbiz Queenstown in 1999 and starred Mr Newell.

However, the 2014 production will be set in the modern day ''Occupy'' movement.

The radical interpretation will involve a live orchestra, television video footage, social media, riots and protests and be ''high-tech, fast moving and loud'', the brief says.

Mr Newell, as outgoing president who did not seek re-election, told the annual meeting Chicago was one of the most successful shows Showbiz had produced.

The season in May performed well at the box office and won best overall show, best sound and light, and best female lead for Fiona Stephenson at the Southern Lakes Performance and Theatre Awards.

While not as profitable, La Cage Aux Folles, with Memorial Centre Productions, was a success in every other way, particularly in introducing new young men to theatre, attendees heard.

The annual meeting saw the formation of the 2014 committee, which consists of new president Sandy Cochrane, vice-president Steve Wilde, immediate past-president Mr Newell, treasurer Greg Thompson and secretary Hilary Finnie, with returning members Kathleen Brentwood, Maggie Ennis, Sam Farr, David Oakley and Ella Wilson and new members Lucy Forrest, Kirstin Mitchell and Miss Stephenson.

Alex Derbie, Cheryl Collie and Emma Newell did not seek re-election.

Mr Newell and Ms Finnie were both honoured with life memberships of Showbiz Queenstown.

Mr Thompson outlined Mr Newell's 19 years and Ms Finnie's 24 years of involvement when presenting the awards.
