Dave Bolger, of Climbing Queenstown, made the most of a stunning early season snow cover at The Remarkables on Sunday, with conditions usually reserved for July.

Mr Bolger is pictured in what was described by Climbing Queenstown's Chris Prudden as a "unique experience", skiing towards a liquid Lake Alta.

"Usually by the time there is this much snow around, Lake Alta is well frozen and you can ski across it.

"At the other end of the season, winter ice on Alta can easily last until December."

The countdown is well and truly on to the beginning of the snowsports season, with Coronet Peak scheduled to open on June 6 and The Remarkables following suit on June 20.
