An Australian teenager (16) was tackled to the ground by a member of the public on Wednesday afternoon after fleeing from police when he was caught shoplifting wristbands.
Sergeant Linda Stevens, of Queenstown, said the youth was being interviewed by officers at 5.20pm when he ran away.
Two officers and a patrol car were chasing him when a male bystander tackled and wrestled him to the ground, allowing police to take control.
Sgt Stevens said the youth was issued with a police warning. No further action would be taken.
