A group of four Israeli tourists had more than $2000 in New Zealand and Australian currency stolen from their tents and vehicle at the Lakeview Holiday Park at Wanaka, on Saturday.
Constable Ian Henderson said the theft was "awful" for the two visiting couples, aged between 19 and 20.
It served as a timely reminder for holidaymakers readying themselves for Christmas and New year camping trips to secure their possessions, cash, and valuables.
"Lock it or lose it," is the message from police for the holiday season, Const Henderson said.
Thieves were "opportunistic" and targeted campers, who often relaxed their usual security-conscious ways when on holiday, he said.
The Israelis left one of their car doors unlocked, which allowed the thieves access to the cash.
A digital camera was also stolen from their tent during the raid, Const Henderson said.
