Wanaka's former police station will be transferred to Land Information New Zealand (Linz) for disposal action by Christmas, New Zealand Police has confirmed.
The ageing Helwick St building in the centre of Wanaka has sat vacant since the beginning of September when Wanaka's policing staff relocated to their new $3 million headquarters on Ballantyne Rd.
At the time, New Zealand Police national manager, asset optimisation, Andrew MacArthur said there were still some ''admin matters'' to be carried out before the property could be transferred to Linz for disposal.
He said yesterday the work - which included obtaining an independent valuation of the property and providing its history to Linz - was now almost complete and the handover was imminent.
''It will be transferred to Linz by Christmas.''
Mr MacArthur would not disclose the independent valuation for the property, but the Queenstown Lakes District Council online ratings database lists its land value as $950,000 and capital value as $1,050,000.
The station was built in 1971 and was subsequently extended several times to accommodate increasing staff numbers.
New Zealand Police is believed to have owned the 986sq m site since the 1950s.
