Joy Paterson hopes horse lovers from around Otago will rally to support the victims of the Victorian bushfire tragedy.

She has organised a horse trek from Lake Hawea, which will cross the mountain ridge line over to Lake Wanaka, and is calling on riders from around the region to get involved.

The trek will take place next weekend, Otago Anniversary weekend.

Funds raised from entry fees will go to the Victorian bushfire appeal.

"We rode it as a charity trek for another organisation last year. Everyone raved about the scenery and terrain."

The trek rises to 1500m from Glen Dene Station at Lake Hawea and goes along a ridgeline before dropping into Mt Burke Station at Lake Wanaka.

Riders will trek for about eight or nine hours on Saturday, with a shorter four-hour journey on Sunday, to allow participants to travel home, Mrs Paterson said.

Mrs Paterson and her husband Don are regular riders on the Cavalcade. Mr Paterson is a pack trail leader on a different cavalcade route each year.

Offers of equipment, supplies, and support had rolled in for the fundraising trek, Mrs Paterson said.
