A Queenstown man has been charged over a crash that left a German woman in a critical condition.

Police announced today that a 26-year-old Queenstown man has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury, in relation to the crash on Gorge Road, Queenstown, on March 13.

The crash had left a 22-year-old German woman in a critical condition with serious head injuries.

''She has since recovered enough to return to Germany with her family, who had travelled to New Zealand to support her,'' police said in a statement.

The man will appear in the Queenstown District Court on June 24.

The woman was trapped in a black Honda Odyssey, wedged between an embankment and the rear of a building in the Gorge Road Retail Park for several hours before being discovered.

She was transported to Lakes District Hospital and then flown to Dunedin Hospital's ICU.
