A record 600 people tucked into fine food and wine at Arrowtown’s Long Lunch yesterday.

Sitting at tables stretching along the township’s main street, Buckingham St, diners enjoyed meals provided by a dozen local eateries.

Organiser Malcolm Blakey said the event had steadily grown in popularity since the first in 2011.

"It’s the first time we’ve actually managed to fill the street end-to-end.

"This year it’s been a bit of a squeeze, so 600 is probably the absolute capacity."

The weather gods continued to smile on the event with "hot weather and blue skies every year".

"We’ve just been so lucky because we don’t have a wet weather plan — if it rained we’d just have to cancel.

"The biggest problem has been finding enough [sun] umbrellas."

The event’s fundraising beneficiaries this year are four women from Arrowtown and Gibbston who are taking part in the Oxfam Trailwalker in Whakatane next March.
