A vehicle plunged off State Highway 6 above Lake Wakatipu at the Devil's Staircase south of Queenstown yesterday, the fourth to do so on the same stretch of road this week.

The crash, just before 2pm, involved one vehicle.

Constable Terry Wood, of Queenstown, said the 39-year-old New Zealander was travelling home from work.

He was driving south towards Kingston when he lost control of the vehicle, "for whatever reason'', Const Wood said.

"It is very wet, but it has been for a couple of days.''

The crash, on the Queenstown side of an area known as the Devil's Staircase, left the man "shaken but uninjured''.

The car ended up next to a Toyota van that crashed at the same spot on Wednesday.

It was the fourth similar crash in that location this week.

On Monday evening, an American couple ended up in scrub after their rental vehicle left the road.

As reported in yesterday's Otago Daily Times, two crashes occurred within 10 minutes of each other on Wednesday afternoon.

Const Wood urged drivers to take care on the road.

"When conditions change, make sure you adjust your speed to suit. Give yourself an extra bit of leeway to make sure you get home safely.''

Firefighters from Kingston attended the incident.

Crew member Peter Ottley said the the vehicle crossed the centre line as it approached a 75kmh bend and went down the bank, over a culvert and rolled down on to its side.
