QAC finally gets 16ha of land it has sought

Queenstown Airport Corporation (QAC) will finally get its hands on 16 hectares of Remarkables Park land after a massive, drawn-out, legal battle.

The airport began to cast admiring glances at the land which bordered the aerodrome, south of the main runway, about 11 years ago.

The corporation has sought the land, dubbed ''Lot 6'', since for expansion, particularly for general aviation, such as helicopters and light aircraft.

Remarkables Park Ltd, owned by Porter Group, fought against it, in a series of complex Environment Court cases and appeals.

But the airport corporation won the battle and the Governor-General and Minister for Land Information have now issued a proclamation which

allows the land to be taken for aerodrome purposes, under the Public Works Act.

The 16ha will vest with the airport on November 1.

It is yet to agree a price with Remarkables Park directors and Porter Group bosses, brothers Alastair and John Porter.

Airport chief executive Colin Keel said the land value would be determined as of the date the land was vested

''We will work with Remarkables Park Ltd to agree the appropriate value of the land.''
