Three caught drink-driving in Queenstown

Three drink-drivers were caught in Queenstown this morning during a police checkpoint on Lake Esplanade.

Sergeant Steve Watt said police tested 220 drivers between 6.30am and 8am and said it was ''disappointing'' three of those drivers were over the legal alcohol limit.

One driver had a result of 339mcg and had been issued with an infringement, one gave a result of 499mcg and would be appearing in the Queenstown District Court and the third had elected a blood sample be taken.

Another seven had tested positive for alcohol, but were below the legal limit.

"It's disappointing to see so early in the morning people are driving while intoxicated.

"It's important to realise if you have a few the night before the effects do last for quite some time and it takes a number of hours for the alcohol to be clear of your system.''

Another drink-driver was arrested at 12.20am on Sunday.

The 36-year-old female was stopped at a check point on Beach St and had a breath alcohol level of 694mcg.

She would also be appearing in court.

"Impairment is a really big focus for us this month - we'll be spending a lot of time on the road ... it really is the 'anywhere, anytime','' Sgt Watt said.
