More than 150 bikers braved rain, wind and sunshine during the third edition of the Glenorchy Gravel Grind on Saturday.

The Glenorchy Trails Trust event, held on three different courses on the scenic gravel roads around the head of Lake Wakatipu, raised about $15,000, chairman Steve Hewland said.

The money would go towards trail projects including a mountain bike skills park for the township’s children.

The premier ride, the Stoked Grind, was held on a 160km course that took riders from Glenorchy to the ends of the Greenstone and Routeburn roads, up Paradise Valley to Chinaman’s Bluff, then up the Rees Valley before returning to the township.

Michaela Rogan won the women’s category for the second year in a row in 5hr 49min 51sec, and Joshua Haggerty, of Invercargill, won the men’s ride in 5hr 0min 42sec.

Riders also competed on two shorter courses, the 86km Twin Rivers Ride and the 56km Paradise Dash from Glenorchy to Paradise and back.
