Clutha recreation centre chairman Jeff Seymour said the complex was "well and truly" on its way, and the opening was planned for the first weekend in November.
Mr Seymour said he was delighted the Dynapoint flooring was nearly finished. It was thought to be New Zealand's biggest installation of the seamless shock-absorbing flooring.
The multilayered product was laid with a recycled rubber base and finished in layers of polyurethane. Sports markings and colour would be applied before a matte multiple-coat finish.
The community voted to raise money for the flooring at a meeting last November. Many sports clubs looked forward to playing on it.
Yesterday marked another step forward for the centre with a sponsorship agreement signed between the Clutha recreation centre committee and Allied Press Ltd, publisher of the Otago Daily Times.
Allied Press managing director Julian Smith said the Cross Recreation Centre was a terrific facility.
"The Clutha district has always been a great supporter of the Otago Daily Times and in our 150th year of operation we believe it is an ideal time to put something back into the community," Mr Smith said.
"The centre is truly outstanding and will benefit the whole district, not just Balclutha."
The fitness centre inside the complex would be named the ODT Fitness Centre and would house exercise equipment formerly used at the Balclutha swimming pool.
Mr Seymour said the sponsorship agreement was a great boost.
