The Walker family's back yard in Queen St, Milton, was completely underwater yesterday.

Shelley Walker said the water came up on Saturday morning.

"We didn't flush the toilets at all [on Saturday]. All along Queen St the toilets weren't working."

At its height, the water in the back yard was level with the seat on her children's swing, and her garden shed was awash.

"Queen St always floods," she said.

"Because of the rain earlier in the week, we lifted everything and didn't really put it down again."

Ms Walker expects it will take four days for the water to recede from her yard.

Spencer St resident Vickie Byrnes spent $27,000 raising her house after the 2007 flood. Since buying the house in 1980, it had flooded five times, prompting her to raise it 900mm.

In terms of being able to sleep at night, raising the house was worth it, she said, but she was angry because the flooding was not caused by the river but by the town's stormwater system.

"The water went right thorough the section twice this week."

On Wednesday the water was up to her clothesline, and on Saturday it covered everything and flooded her garage.

"It [the floodwater] was the same height as 2006, but not as high as 2007."

Flooding on Ossian St was turned into an opportunity for family fun time on Saturday.

Raymond and Amanda Burleigh's children were upset at seeing the water surrounding their house, so Mr Burleigh floated some decoy ducks on the temporary pond and took his son Alex fishing.

"They were pretty stressed, so we got the row-boat out - we had to make it fun for them," Mrs Burleigh said.

While there was no water in the house itself, there was about 30cm of water in their shed.

"It's the third time in five years the house has flooded," she said. "We believe our road is making us flood."

At 3.45pm on Saturday, the Clutha District Civil Defence issued a statement saying emergency services were becoming increasingly frustrated that motorists were attempting to detour around Milton and running into trouble.

Senior Constable Steve Griffiths, of Milton, said police issued about five tickets to people who moved "Road Closed" barriers and drove down the flooded roads, putting themselves and emergency services workers at risk.

Milton residents woke on Saturday to find Shakespeare, Dryden, Burns, Lisburn, MacAndrew, Tokoiti, Moore, Ossian, High, Mill, Pope, Scott and Bruce Sts closed.

There were reports of flooding on Kakapuaka, Finlayson and Phosphate Rds and the Papatowai Highway.

By 10.30am on Saturday, there were reports of flooding on Gormack and Moir Sts, Balclutha, Clydevale Rd, Crowley, Tuapeka Flat Rd, and some Lawrence streets.
