Principal Jodie Howard, and her daughters Sienna (8) and Ayla (11) attended the new Wanaka South Primary School's first open day yesterday evening, held in a marquee.

Construction of the school, next to the Wanaka Recreation Centre, in the new Three Parks commercial area, is just beginning but establishment board of trustees chairman Ian Hall assured about 70 prospective parents and children it would be fully staffed and ready for action at the beginning of the first term next year.

He expected the school to cater for at least 200 children in its first year, growing eventually to 700.
