It scored 16 consecutive points on the way to a 62-51 win over Andy Bay Kavanagh in the women’s club competition at the Edgar Centre on Tuesday.
Kavanagh had led 28-20 midway through the second quarter.
But its offence stalled as it began turning the ball over.
Varsity was able to turn that into points at the other end, getting to the hoop well, while Tara Clement (21 points) was influential shooting from deep.
Kavanagh went scoreless for close to 10 minutes before a Laura Ring three-pointer ended its dry spell to make it 36-31 midway through the third quarter.
But Varsity went inside to centre Hannah Riddle-Pelchen (12 points), who scored seven points late in the quarter to help her team to a 50-37 lead at the final break.
From there, Kavanagh looked to mount a comeback, guard Dre Whaanga (12 points) its most prominent in that.
It was unable to pull close enough though, Riddle-Pelchen and Kelly Thompson (six points) both coming up with several key plays to close the game out for Varsity.
The win takes Varsity to a 5-2 record, leaving it in second ahead of Kavanagh and the South Pac Magic, both on four wins.
The Magic put on a strong showing against the Andy Bay Falcons to bounce back after two losses.
Its defence locked in, while Georgia Te Au top-scored with 20 points as it claimed an 86-20 win.
Top side Ajax remained unbeaten with a 72-46 win over South Pac OGHS.
Zoe Richards had 30 points, including 13 in a devastating first quarter as Ajax opened a 21-6 gap. Abby Harris top-scored for OGHS with 14.
