Football: All Whites plummet in world rankings

New Zealand have plunged 37 places to be ranked 97th in the latest men's world football rankings issued by FIFA.

The All Whites suffered 3-0 defeats at the hands of both Mexico and Australia earlier this month and consequently have slumped to their lowest position since September 2009 when they were ranked 100th.

They were harmed by the falling value given to the first phase of matches at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa where the All Whites drew with Slovakia, Italy and Paraguay meaning they lost 183 ranking points in the month.

New Zealand remain the highest-ranked side in the Oceania Football Confederation, 59 places ahead of Fiji.

Spain remain the top ranked side in world football, while Mexico, who beat the United States 4-2 to win the CONCACAF Gold Cup, have jumped 19 paces to be ranked ninth and Australia have dropped two places to 22nd.
