The Top 10 Great Carisbrook characters

1. Jimmy Duncan: All Black, later a referee. Credited with inventing the five-eighth system of back play and used to wear a hat to disguise his bald patch.

2. Vic Cavanagh: Master coach. Once allegedly inspired his players to a famous Ranfurly Shield comeback after calling them "girls" at halftime. Developed a style of play based on rucking the stuffing out of opponents. And yes, he should have been All Black coach in 1949.

3. Stephen Boock: Spin bowler. Umpires didn't know whether to laugh or cry at his antics and banter.

4. Marc Ellis: Rugby player. Where to start? Ellis was the great entertainer in a greatly entertaining Otago era in the 1990s.

5. Whang McKenzie: Radio commentator and the voice of the Ranfurly Shield era. "There'll be snow on it when it comes down." "Whang! It's a goal!"

6. David Latta: Rugby player and king of Balclutha. Few epitomised the spirit of Otago in the late 1980s and early 1990s quite like "Crazy". Not the biggest man but played with heart and courage.

7. Don Denis: The pie stall guy. Generations of Carisbrook fans remember buying pies that may or may not have been hot from Denis' stall.

8. Steve Hotton: Rugby player. Popular publican from South Dunedin had his own club and a beautifully groomed moustache.

9. Gordon Hunter: Otago coach. Dry, intelligent, much loved and lamented rugby man.

10. Larry Salmon: Otago masseur. Great with his hands and enjoyed hosting teams at the Beach Hotel.
