Kidunot won the Great Northern Hurdles at Ellerslie on Saturday in the colours of white with emerald green sleeves carried by the other Southland-trained winner of the race 43 years ago.

Kidunot is trained at Gore by Ellis Winsloe, who bred the horse with his wife, Lynne.

He races the gelding in partnership with Bill and Jim Hazlett, of Waianawa and Len Insall, of Invercargill.

The owners were at Ellerslie on Saturday with the exception of Insall, who is on holiday in Australia.

The other Southland-trained winner of the Northern was Macdonald, owned by Bill Hazlett, father of Bill and grandfather of Jim.

Macdonald was trained at Riverton by Bill Hillis and ridden by Graeme Walters in his 1966 win.

The Northern has a 117-year history.

Kidunot was ridden by Daniel Bothamley, the Christchurch-based jockey.

He was fined $250 for making a celebratory gesture before the winning post.

Kidunot is an 8yr-old by Gaius, whom Winsloe stood at his Redlo Stud at Knapdale.

Gaius also sired Cavallieri, winner of the 1991 New Zealand Derby at Ellerslie.

Kidunot is out of Red Alarm, who produced four live foals before she died in 2004.

Red Alarm, by Alarm Call, who also stood at Redlo Stud, won two races when trained by Winsloe's late father, Ted.

Red Alarm was left by Red Sash in 1984 after the latter had failed to leave a foal for four years.

Red Sash (Bellborough-Red Boa) won 18 races, including eight when trained by Ted Winsloe for Neil White, of Winton, in the late 1960s.

They bred from Red Sash in partnership.

Ted Winsloe trained the winners of 1212 races, including the 1962 NZ Grand National Hurdles with Vamoose.

He trained Grant to win the 1993 Great Western Steeplechase for Mary Dalley, daughter of Bill Hazlett sen.

Kidunot is on his way home with the prospect of steeplechasing next winter.

He has won six times from 14 starts over hurdles.

"He's a beautiful jumper. We have taken him hunting and put him over the showjumps. There is an eventing course at the back of the Gore racecourse and he just loves it," Winsloe said.

Ellis Winsloe originally leased Kidunot to a syndicate of six.

Kidunot failed to win in 22 starts at 3, 4 and 5 and the syndicate was disbanded.

Jim Hazlett, who took care of Kidunot for two winters, remained in the ownership,Kidunot had his maiden win as a hurdler at Oamaru in August, 2007 as a 6yr-old.

He won an 1850m maiden flat race at Winton at his next start.

Winsloe said winning the Northern was a highlight of his career.

"This one is a bit special because we bred him and he is part of the Winsloe household."

Kidunot raced handy to the pace and won by a length and three-quarters from Ho Down, whose rider Lance Macfarlane lost his whip after the second last fence.

The favourite High Season fell in the middle stages.

His rider Brett Scott was stood down from his remaining ride on Volkswagin in the Northern Steeples.

Wolf Pack (Chad Ormsby) fell at the second last fence.

Corey Parish was suspended until midnight next Saturday.

He admitted allowing his mount Le Grande to shift in 100m after the start of race 10.

He tightened Gusher and The Mooseisloose.
