Otago rowers battled hot conditions on their way to 37 medals at the South Island championships on  Lake Ruataniwha over the weekend.

The Dunstan Arm club continued its strong form, bagging 15 medals, while Otago Boys’ High School, Wakatipu and Otago rowing club all had successful regattas.

As usual Dunstan Arm was strong in the men’s masters races, although was also prominent among the age-grades.

It claimed the girls under-15 octuple by 16sec in 7min 20.41sec, while also claiming gold in the women’s coxed quadruple sculls.

Perhaps even more impressive was that it managed both second and third in the girls under-16 double sculls.

Skye Morton and Meg Creagh secured silver in 8min 01.90sec, while MacKenzie Ealson and Paige Furrie won bronze in 8min 09.48sec.

The under-16 double sculls proved to be a good event for the region, with Otago Boys’ High School taking gold in the boys race.

Jack Weber and Oliver Haig rowed 7min 16.09sec to claim the win.

Behind them was the Otago Rowing Club’s Angus Kenny and Josh Jukes, who were second in 7min 21.94sec.

Ben Mason and Thomas Ryan also had success in the double sculls for Otago Boys’, taking silver in the under-19 race.

Mason also won the under-19 single sculls, while Reuben McArley was first in the intermediate single sculls.

The school also had a win in the under-16 coxed quadruple sculls and was second in the intermediate eight.
