World champion Hamish Bond was not the only member of his family to win a rowing gold medal last Sunday.

Bond won his third consecutive world pairs title with Eric Murray in Slovenia, and younger brother Alistair was a member of the Otago University eight that won the international university race at the Golden Cup regatta in Moscow.

Alistair Bond broke the good news to his parents in Twizel through an email.

"We won," he wrote.

"It was really rough water, with lots of boat clashes but in the end we passed everyone with 2km to go and won by four lengths."

The only down side for Alistair was that the eights race was held at the same time as the world championships pair and he was not able to watch Hamish's race on live on television.

There were 10 crews in the 7.5km race on the Moskva River, which runs through the heart of Moscow.

The others were Pavia from Italy, Cambridge, Nottingham, crews from Poland, Estonia, Germany, Netherlands and two from Russia.

The Otago University crew had two collisions in the first 1200m and was lying sixth at the 2km mark.

Otago University cox Mike Dessoulavy purposefully held the crew wide on the corner to avoid further collisions.

Otago slowly moved through the field over the middle 3km.

Otago battled for the lead with the Estonian crew with 2km to go, took a clear lead with 1500m left and finally moved out to a four-length win.

The Otago University eight was invited to Moscow after its strong performance at the international university race in China, when it came second to the Tsinghua University of Beijing.

"The crew prepared well with some fairly big rows on the Otago Harbour to gear up for the longer distance," coach Glen Sinclair said.

• The St Kevin's College girls eight has been invited to compete in the schools section of the Gallagher Great Race on the Waikato River at the weekend.

Every year at the Gallagher Great Race, Waikato University invites top secondary school crews to compete.

The St Kevin's eight won the silver medal in the under-17 section at this year's Maadi Cup and a bronze medal in the under-18 eight.

The school crews race the clock on Saturday in a time trial over a 3.5km course. The crews are then seeded and race in a head-to-head two-boat race on Sunday.

The Oamaru girls will be racing against Waikato Diocesan, St Peter's Cambridge, Wanganui Collegiate, St Margaret's and Baradene College.

The St Kevin's eight is: Johanna and Caitlan Kearney, Bethany Robertson, Georgia Tangney, Eilee Robinson, Lucy Fauth, Katherine Hope, Loren Haggerty and cox Sophie Moynihan.
