The Otago Boys’ High School team claimed the honours at the annual Spartan 10s tournament at Miller Park on Saturday.

It beat the Otago Islanders team 24-17 in the final.

But the real winner was Foster Hope Otago which should pocket about $10,000.

Organiser Shane Waldron said he had not done the final sums but was confident the charity event would have met its fundraising goal.

The couple of thousand people who turned out were treated to a warm day and some quality rugby.

The event has been running since 2014 and Waldron felt the level of competition was probably the strongest yet.

West Taieri sprang a surprise or two. It upset Southern and also bested the defending champion Taieri.

That latter of those two wins earned some serious bragging rights.

The Spartans won the over-35 grade, defeating Harry’s Superstars 22-21 in a tense final.

Otago Islanders beat Kaiapoi 29-5 to win the women’s titles. Some junior grades were also played.

There were no serious injuries "just a few bumps and bruises", Waldron said.

"We had a really good crowd and the day was beautiful, so the grounds were packed and the atmosphere was unreal. It really made for a special occasion," he said.

"We had an auction and function afterwards. We have not had a full count up yet but I’m pretty confident we have cracked the 10k mark."
