Rugby: Big names back to play Blues

Some big names are back for the Highlanders' crucial Super 15 game against the Blues at Carisbrook tomorrow night.

Back in the run-on team are wing Kade Poki, halfback Jimmy Cowan, flankers Alando Soakai and Adam Thomson and hooker Jason Rutledge.

"I wouldn't say they were the A team," coach Jamie Joseph said. "Those players were either injured or needed a rest, so we decided to do that last week.

"They have also played consistently well all season so they are getting another opportunity."

Back on the bench are wing James Paterson, halfback Aaron Smith, lock Tom Donnelly and hooker Mahonri Schwalger.

Openside flanker John Hardie has not been included in the 22 for the game.

Players such as Paterson, Hardie, and Schwalger in particular could be disappointed in not starting the game, Joseph said. He felt for Hardie, after his outstanding game against the Crusaders, in not making the 22.

"That's just the type of cover we need to have on the bench," Joseph said.

"With Adam [Thomson] able to play equally well in all positions we decided to leave him [Hardie] out. But that's not a reflection on how he performed. He will get another opportunity."

Colin Slade and Shaun Treeby were not considered because of injury.
