Rugby: O'Connell inspires Taieri to victory

Kieran Moffat, Kori Rupene and Charlie O'Connell each scored two tries as Taieri proved too strong for Alhambra-Union at Peter Johnstone Park.

The key for Taieri was O'Connell, its captain and No 8, who constantly exposed gaps around the fringes and served as an inspiration for his side's defence.

A try-saving tackle on Tili Puloka with time almost up was typical of his dedication.

O'Connell's outstanding form helped highlight the skills of halfback Ryan Hammer, who cleared the ball quickly and was solid defensively.

Lock Kurt Webster combined with O'Connell to give Taieri an edge at the lineout.

Taieri was also well served by Moffat and Ben Nowell in midfield, and by fullback Rupene and winger Shannon Young.

Alhambra-Union had a fair share of territory and possession, but was let down by handling errors.

Prop Scott Manson was a force at scrum time and in broken play, and halfback Caleb Gray maintained a high work-rate.

Taieri 39 (Kieran Moffat 2, Charlie O'Connell 2, Kori Rupene 2; Will McKee 3 con, pen), Alhambra-Union 3 (Peter Breen pen). Halftime: Taieri 22-3.
