Humphrey Skinner wanders out on to Carisbrook with his walking stick and surveys the empty grandstand.

The Otago rugby team is practising line-outs in the background as the 86-year-old walks about the hallowed turf.

It is a scene he knows well.

"I played fullback for Pirates in the '40s, when this was our home ground," he muses.

"They're certainly fitter and bigger in the professional game."

Mr Skinner was a three-time championship winner with Pirates, played for Otago against Southland in 1947 and was a provincial referee in the 1950s.

"Pirates won the competition three years out of five when I was playing. We didn't win it again for 50 years," he chuckles.

"I've got some good memories... I'm going to miss coming here."

Mr Skinner has been supporting Otago rugby from the Main Stand for more than half a century.

"We were originally offered seats for 25 years for 100 each, or 190 for two, so I got two."

"They're usually used by my grandchildren, these days. But I've got my seats in the new stadium. I think the move was just one of those things. It's inevitable."

Mr Skinner, no relation to All Black Kevin Skinner, is one of 905 members who will be invited to keep their Carisbrook seats after the final match today.

"It was something we offered our 2010 ground members as part of their season ticket renewal," Otago Rugby Football Union marketing manager Doug McSweeney says.

As we leave, Otago captain Eben Joubert comes over to present Mr Skinner with a signed Otago jersey.

"Your support over 50 years is unbelievable. We look forward to seeing you at the new stadium as well," the No 7 says.
