Tennis: Mixed results for Kiwis

New Zealand Davis Cup team member Dan King-Turner has been beaten overnight by Thailand's Kittipong Wachiramanowong in the second round of qualifying at the US$550,000 ATP Thailand Open in Bangkok.

King-Turner was defeated 6-4 6-4 by Wachiramanowong after he had earlier beaten local player Girttaboon Prahmanee 7-6(5) 7-6(4) in the first round of qualifying.

In Vietnam, fellow Kiwi Davis Cup player Rubin Statham won the doubles title at the Vietnam Futures with Thai player Weerapat Doakmaiklee.

The pair beat the second seeds Liang-Chi Huang (Taipei) and Bowen Ouyang (China) 6-1 6-0 in the final.

It was Staham's sixth doubles title of the year.

In Australia, Michael Venus reached the semifinals of the singles draw at the Port Pirie US$15,000 event. Venus beat Australian wildcard Ben Mousley in straight sets to make the semis but then fell to second seed Matt Reid (Australia) 3-6 6-4 6-4.
