Programme orchestrated to teach pupils about music

Pupils at 13 primary and intermediate schools across Otago experienced classical music as played by the experts from Dunedin Symphony Orchestra this week.

A group of six musicians is visiting schools this week as part of the orchestra’s annual outreach programme, which aims to introduce young people to music and instruments.

This programme features some well-known and not so familiar pieces played on a selection of orchestral instruments.

All four sections of the orchestra (strings, woodwind, brass and percussion) are represented in the 50-minute performances, which include a mix of classical and pop tunes.

This includes a medley from Moana; the Gypsies’ Chorus from Bizet’s opera Carmen; and a theme from Monty Python. At least half the programme is from the classical repertoire.

The programme is aimed at Year 1-8 pupils.

With the support of the Dunedin Casino Charitable Trust, and with a van provided by Cooke Howlison Toyota, the musical experience comes at no cost to schools.
