The Otago Regional Council is revising its policy on handling dangerous and disaster-prone dams and is asking for public submissions.
The update will ensure it aligns with new nationwide building (dam safety) regulations.
Regional council consents team leader Rebecca Jackson said the initiative aimed to prevent catastrophic failures and ensure dam safety, especially in earthquake and flood-prone areas.
The proposed amendments mainly affect dam owners, requiring them to regularly assess and report their dams’ conditions.
Submissions are open until December 15.
After the submission deadline, the council will determine the number of hearings required before finalising the new policy.
