Big black V8 ’Cuda makes the right noise

The powerful V8 burble of Andrew Herbert’s shiny black 1973 Plymouth ’Cuda will be music to the ears of American muscle car-lovers at next month’s Great USA Day.     The giant car show will be held on Saturday, March 7, at Hancock Park.

The car, which Mr Herbert has owned for the past two years, was imported from the United States and refurbished over an 18-month period.

It has been back on the road since September last year.

The epitome of a high performance muscle car, the ’Cuda is powered by a Mopar 408 stroker V8 engine, pulls about 450 horsepower and has a four-speed manual gearbox.

Mr Herbert is particularly proud of the flawless shiny black paint-job on the car, which features PPG Envirobase HP as a base-coat, with PPG Opticlear clearcoat giving it a highly glossy look.

Mr Herbert distributes car paint through his Platinum Paints Dunedin Ltd business and is keen to show off how great it looks on his own car.

A member of the Stateside Streeters car club on-and-off for the past 30 years, Mr Herbert has owned a series of American cars, from 1950s classics tolate model vehicles.     Along with his 1973 Plymouth ’Cuda, he is also currently the owner of a 2005 Mustang.

A life-long fan of American cars, Mr Herbert is looking forward to spending the day talking with other enthusiasts about his car and admiring the hundreds of beautifully turned-out vehicles.

‘‘There is no stress, no pressure. It’s just a good day out to enjoy some great cars,’’ he said.

‘‘There is great camaraderie at the event — everyone is friendly and happy to tell you about their pride and joy.

‘‘We all have the same passion,’’ he said.
