A section of the West Harbour cycleway-walkway will be closed for a day while Dunedin City Council contractors undertake sea protection work.

The Magnet St to Ravensbourne section would close on Monday from 9am until about 4pm, Dunedin City Council senior contracts supervisor Peter Hughes said.

Rocks would be added to a loose sea wall to protect about 30m of the track that was under threat.

The 30m section's proximity to the sea meant waves had "eaten right up to the track".

The deterioration would become dangerous if it was not halted, because it would start to undermine the track, Mr Hughes said.

The section was just south of the Ravensdown jetty, he said.

Fulton Hogan was undertaking the work.

The 1.2km section opened in 2006, and a 1.3km extension to Maia opened in 2008.

The Ravensbourne to Maia section will not be affected by the work.
