Dunedin didn't carry through its plan to try and poach the money-spinning NZI Sevens tournament from Wellington, it has been revealed.

It has been reported this morning that Wellington is almost certain to keep the NZI Sevens after its current contact expires in 2010- and that no other centres tabled a bid.

In February Dunedin Venues Management boss David Davies said the city was eager to make a play for the Sevens to be hosted at new Forsyth Barr Stadium.

"[We] have been talking about a list of events we wish to target, and clearly Sevens is one of them," he told the ODT at the time.

However, Stuff has reported this morning that the centres which indicated they wanted the Sevens - Dunedin and Auckland - did not put in bids.

Mr Davies said the bidding process came too early in the life of the yet-to-be-completed Forsyth Barr Stadium.

"We wouldn't have got a quality submission in front of the relevant bodies because we are focused on bringing the stadium into commission."
