Sneaky drivers evade airport parking fees

Dunedin International Airport is getting tough on people trying to evade fees by parking in Momona Village.

It has asked Momona residents for their vehicle registration numbers so it can create a database of legitimately parked vehicles within the private housing block.

Dunedin International Airport owned Momona and its 30-odd houses, which were all tenanted, chief executive John McCall said.

"We've asked residents for their registration numbers because if the vehicles aren't theirs, we need to know about it," he said.

The airport's ownership of Momona included village roads, on which members of the public could not legally park.

Road maintenance was undertaken at the airport's cost.

"The roads are there for the residents. We own all the housing and all the open green area, including the village green that sits in front of the village," Mr McCall said.

Momona residents had complained about an increasing number of vehicles, including rental cars, parked within the village, he said.

"We've never had issues in the past, but more recently it's come about that commercial operators are using the village as a parking lot. We have had to put a stop to that for the benefit of our residents," Mr McCall said.

The airport had authority to tow vehicles from the village, but Mr McCall said warnings to repeat offenders had sufficed to date.

"Our first approach is to understand who has vehicles parked in the village.

"Where we have identified a commercial operator, we've advised them that they're not welcome to park inside the village," he said.

Private property signs would also probably be erected in and around Momona.

Some rental car companies had taken to parking cars along Miller Rd, which connected to Momona Village and led to the airport terminal.

Mr McCall said the airport had no control over Miller Rd, which was part of the national state highway network.

There was plenty of space at the terminal for rental companies to use, under contract with the airport, he said. Likewise, members of the public had ample space and were not being squeezed out of the terminal area, Mr McCall said.

"We have in excess of 1000 car parks and provide free pick-up and drop-off areas, as well as free parking in the main car park for up to 15 minutes. If those two services don't suit people, the only way they can have free parking is to go off the airport and park on public roads," he said.

Parking at the terminal cost up to $18 for the first 24 hours, up to $58 for the first week and up to $42 for every week thereafter.

Unlimited parking for one year cost about $1100.
