Police are investigating the theft of passports which they fear might be used for identity fraud.

The passports disappeared after they were posted in Auckland to the Indian High Commission in Wellington, The New Zealand Herald reported.

It is believed at least 13 courier packages, some containing more than one passport had disappeared.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard said the missing passports were a concern.

"If the passports have gone missing and someone who shouldn't have them has got them, it is always a concern about illegal use of those passports and identify fraud," he told the newspaper.
