National's Wellington Central candidate, Stephen Franks, is using a hidden camera to snap vandals who are destroying his election campaign posters.

They've been smashed, set on fire and rammed by cars.

So far he's had to replace about 100 at a cost of around $4000, TV3 News reported tonight.

"When it's co-ordinated, systematic, you become a little bit bitter about the kind of people who think that's the way to conduct elections," Mr Franks said.

"I'd love to know this isn't part of someone's deliberate campaign, but if it is we want to catch them."

Labour's candidate, Grant Robertson, said he was running a clean campaign.

"I'd be very disappointed if Stephen is suggesting that our campaign was in any way involved in this," he said.

Mr Franks is using an infra-red camera to catch the night-time marauders.

He has published images of them at work on his website.
