The intricacies of sustainable living will be explored at a workshop to be held at Mataura Community Centre this month.
Southern Reap is running the sustainable living workshop on April 23 from 7.30pm to 9pm, Reap Eastern/Northern Southland community liaison officer Wendy Hopcroft said.
The topic which would come under the microscope at the seminar would be energy saving and would be presented in two parts, Ms Hopcroft said.
St Peter's College head of science and Eastern Southland Sustainable Living Group member John Adams would present the first section, which included ways to make your home more energy-efficient and save money on power bills.
Then Southland Warm Homes manager Keith Page would deliver a presentation, she said.
‘‘This is a fabulous project for Southland which begins with an energy assessment of your home. This can then be followed by the homeowner choosing to proceed with an insulation retrofit which includes hot-water cylinder wraps, fitting of ceiling and under-floor insulation, lagging of pipes etc,'' Ms Hopcroft said.
There was also an option of having a heating appliance installed if required, she said.
There were various subsidies available depending on the homeowners' income level.
To qualify, the house had to be built before 1978.
‘‘Mataura has a lot of older homes and many of its residents would benefit from finding out more about the warm homes project,'' she said.
The workshop is free and is funded by Environment Southland.
