A new sign placed beside State Highway 1 at the entrance to Palmerston has been described as a welcome compromise.

The original proposal by the Waitaki Development Board, that plain red welcome signs be placed at Palmerston and other towns around the Waitaki district, had angered many residents last year.

Palmerston and Kakanui residents had complained about the proposed signs, and a Hampden resident had circulated a petition opposing the removal of the previous colourful signs.

The new welcome sign was a "welcome compromise" and a "win-win" for both the Waihemo Community Board and the Waitaki Development Board, Waihemo Community Board chairman Rod Philip, of Bushey, said on Monday.

The continuing dispute about the replacement of the previous colourful signs by plain red signs appeared to have been resolved.

He had already had suggestions that the coach-and-horses theme in the Palmerston sign should be backed up by a coach ride for visitors to Palmerston.

A standard colour would be used in the signs, which would also be set up beside State Highway 1 at Moeraki and Hampden.

Scenes of Moeraki village and Hector's dolphins would feature on those two signs, Mr Philip said.

The Waitaki Development Board was working on visitor signs with local themes for all the towns in the Waitaki District.
